About

Hi! I'm MELISSA
MY STORY
Back in 2014, I did something crazy. I signed up to run a 6.6K.
I'm guessing you're either in the camp of:
-
"That's not really that crazy."
-
"Yeah, nope. Never gonna happen for me."

My whole life I have HATED running. I was very much in camp 2--but everyone else in my office was running (#peerpressure). It was not long after I signed up that I got a new job in a different state. YES! No need to run.

Sometime in 2018 I decided "ya know maybe I should run that race this year." I really don't remember why. But I faithfully committed to a Couch to 5K plan for...oh...6 weeks. I got to the point where I could do 3 miles and thought "if I can do 3 miles I can do 4.1 come race day."

I could not. While I crossed the finished line, the race was hard and ugly.

I am incredibly stubborn.
I vowed I would keep training to 4.1, redeem my miserable performance and then be done with running.
The day after finally hitting 4.1, 4.5 didn't feel so far off. And then 5 miles. And suddenly a 10K felt within reach. And then one day I signed up for a half marathon. And before I even ran that one, I signed up for another.
My 6.6K was October 2018. From April 2019-January 2020 I did 6 half marathons and 2 full marathons.

I have yet to become the fastest runner (and guess what? That will never happen). But running has brought me friends, experiences, health and lots of shiny medals. So the plan is to keep on going and see where this journey takes me!

WHY THIS BLOG
A lot of people tell me "I could never run a 5K/10K/half/marathon," etc. I was the exact same way. Until the age of 32 I had never in my adult life run a mile. I have MANY old social media posts talking about running being very, very dumb. And very, very not for me.

But one day I pulled a Forrest Gump and just started running. Doing something that I truly never believe I could do gave me so much confidence. Things that previously once felt impossible now feel achievable.

My goal for this blog is that someone out there is inspired to work towards something they have felt is out of reach.
This blog isn't meant to tell you that you have to run. But maybe my story will help you realize you can.

WHY THE SLOTH?
Sloths are my favorite animal (except for my little guy Theodore, of course). I'm not a fast athlete. And quite honesty, I often do not want to move. So let's call it like it is, in terms of my athletic prowess, I relate to the sloth.

But I also love sloths because they are:
-
Adaptable
-
Resilient
-
Always Smiling
